Licensing & Documentation Requirements
What do I need to know about licensing requirements? What documents do I need to upload? How do I know what documents I need to upload
Every state has their own regulations pertaining to buying and selling vehicles at auction. So, what vehicles you can buy will be determined by the laws of where the vehicles you want to buy are located. You can learn more about the different state requirements on our State Licensing Overview page.
Document Assistance at Registration
After you choose a Membership level, Copart will ask you a few questions to determine what you want to buy, where you want to buy and what types of credentials you’ll need to do so. Then the system will give you a list of the documents you’ll need to upload. The list of required documents it gives you works like a to-do list. If you don’t have one of the listed credentials, you can go back and change your answers.
All Members must scan a valid government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license, passport, or ID card. This helps prevent fraud and protects you from identity theft on Copart’s platform.
Submit all your documents through our Document Uploader when you register, or later through the Account Information menu at the top right of your screen. To make things easy, you can often upload images of documents by scanning them, or simply taking a picture with your mobile device.
If you want to submit documents after you’ve created your account, just go to the Document Uploader under the Account menu in the top right corner of your screen. You can open it by clicking or tapping on your name and/or photo.
Document Review & Account Verification
Once your documents are uploaded, we’ll review them to make sure you meet the legal requirements of the places where you wish to buy used vehicles at auction. This usually takes one business day. Once all the required documents have ben approved, your account will be verified and fully activated.
You can see your progress in the Document Upload option under the My Account or Account Menu. You can reach it by selecting your name in the upper right corner of your screen. This is also where you can upload credentials after Registration, in case you get a new license or weren’t able to provide all your documents.
If a document isn’t approved, we’ll notify you by email with details of what issues lead the document to not be approved along with instructions on how to resolve the issue.
Expired Documents & Licenses
Copart can’t accept documents, licenses or credentials that have expired. This is one of the most common reasons documents uploaded by new Members are declined. When you acquire a current credential, replace the old one in the Document Uploader with a scan of the document or a photo of it taken with your mobile device.
Member Licensing will automatically be notified that there is an updated document for them to review and approve. You don’t need to contact Member Services about the new upload and doing so may slow down the review of your documents as our team members stay very busy.
Options to Buy Without Licenses
If you lack the right documentation to buy a vehicle, Copart can connect you with a Broker who has the proper credentials and will let you borrow them for a fee.
You can also search for No License Required vehicles that anyone can purchase without special credentials.
If you are an international buyer, we can connect you with a Certified Reseller or a Copart Lounge operator who provides similar services internationally. These third-party businesses offer a local place where professional staff can help you find, win, ship, import and register vehicles from Copart.
